Dr. Eugenio Fraile Nuez, a Researcher at the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) in Tenerife, Canary Islands, since 2009.

Educational Background

Born in Gran Canaria, Spain, in 1976. Graduated with a Ph.D. in Marine Sciences (Dr. Physical Oceanography) from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. His Ph.D. thesis received the extraordinary prize for the best doctoral thesis in the Experimental Sciences area.

Research Focus

Specializes in Climate Change research, particularly the variability of the thermohaline properties, heat, and mass transport of large-scale ocean processes.

Research Contributions and Achievements

  • Authored over 53 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Involved in more than 30 national and international research projects.
  • Accumulated over 1,500 days at sea, participating in numerous oceanographic cruises on various national and international research vessels globally.

Leadership in Research Projects

  • Physical Oceanography leader of the Malaspina project.
  • Principal Investigator (IP) of the Bimbache, Vulcano I-II, and Vulcana projects, focusing on the study of the variation of physical-chemical, biological, and geological properties of the submarine volcano of El Hierro Island.

Advisory Roles and Memberships

  • Advisor for the National Maritime Security Council of the Spanish Government in Submarine Vulcanological Risk.
  • Physical Oceanography Advisor for the National Maritime Plan from the Fomento Ministry.
  • Member of the Emergency Plan of the Volcanic Risk at the Canary Islands (PEVOLCA).
  • Member of the National Cell of Information and Hazard Analysis and Threats (CIARA) from the Spanish Government.
